Porcelain Crowns
Here at Sparkle Dental, we will often recommend crowns to help teeth regain their former glory. Crowns function as a cap over the tooth that helps it get back to its original function, size, and shape. It can also strengthen the tooth and make it more aesthetically pleasing.
You might need a crown for several reasons. Aesthetic reasons are very common but not as much as health reasons. So, while some people might want to cover a poorly shaped tooth or a discolored one to improve their smiles, others will need a crown in order to preserve their oral health.
This is true in cases when a patient has a cavity that has become too large to fix with a filling. Crowns can also be recommended in order to protect the tooth when our patients have root canal treatment done, or when a tooth is cracked or weakened in any way.
What Are Crowns Made Of?
Crowns can be composed of multiple different materials ranging from porcelain and ceramics to metal alloys. Other materials include a combination of both porcelain and metal, and even composite resin. Either way, we’ll make sure to color the crown so it blends in with the rest of your teeth.
We want to make sure your crown blends in with your natural teeth and that it’s a comfortable fit for you. So, to decide what would be the best material for your case, we analyze a couple of factors such as the location of the tooth and its particular function and shade, the position of the gums, and how much area of the tooth is visible when you smile.
What is the Procedure?
Our first step is to prepare the tooth for the crown. For this, we remove any decay and an outer part of your tooth so the crown will fit in that space. If your tooth needs more support for the crown, we’ll build up its core so it has a solid foundation.
We then go on to make an impression of your tooth, so we have an identical model for the crown. This is accomplished by getting a digital scan of the tooth or using a mold.
While you wait for us to have your permanent crown ready, we might set you up with a temporary one depending on your particular situation. However, temporary crowns might be sensitive to temperatures and are not too resistant to different foods, so we’ll have your permanent crown ready as quickly as possible.
Once we have your permanent crown ready, we’ll start by placing it on your tooth and adjusting as necessary. Once you’re comfortable with how the crown feels and its overall appearance, we will proceed to cement it into place.
Our patients receive a highly professional level of service, and they also benefit from the latest technology in modern dentistry.
